Chief Oshkosh to be discussed at forestry conference

Chief Oshkosh was inducted into the Wisconsin Forestry Hall of Fame last year at the Society of American Foresters annual meeting at Wisconsin Dells.

Next month, the Menominee chief will again be a topic of discussion when the Forest History Association of Wisconsin holds its fall conference in Keshena.

Among the panel discussions will be how Chief Oshkosh’s vision of sustainable practice continues to guide modern silvicultural practice in the present day.

Menominee forest story focus of statewide fall conference

“The Beginning of Change: Tribal History, Tribal Treaties and the Menominee Forest Story” is the theme of the 2024 Forest History Association Of Wisconsin (FHAW) Fall Conference, slated to be held in Keshena in October.

Registration is underway and will end in September for the Oct. 11-12 conference, which will be held at the Menominee Casino Resort and Convention Center.

“We want to bring attention to and tell the story of the Menominee Forest, which is so large it can actually be seen from the space station,” said John Grossman, FHAW board president.

Menominee, Kenosha sign deal for Hard Rock Casino

The Menominee Nation’s dream of having a new casino in southern Wisconsin inched closer to reality Feb. 6 with the formal signing of an agreement with Kenosha officials at the state capitol in Madison.

The Kenosha County Board of Supervisors and the Kenosha Common Council approved intergovernmental agreements recently with the tribe. Those agreements are a necessary part of the process as the Menominee formally submit their request to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Menominee actresses star in new Disney series ‘Echo’

Alaqua Cox is back on the screen, this time in her own series on Disney+.

Cox, the 26-year-old Menominee Nation actress who starred with Jeremy Renner in the Marvel series “Hawkeye” on Disney+, now has her own spinoff series, “Echo.” It is also available on Hulu until April 9.

All five episodes of the gritty, action-packed drama series dropped last week.

Restoration movement honored at feast

Community members feasted Dec. 21 at the Menominee Casino Resort as the Menominee Nation celebrated the 50th anniversary — one day early — of the arrangement that restored the tribe’s status to be federally recognized.

“There are so many people that were involved and are still involved fighting to make sure we still remain a sovereign nation here in our ancestral homeland,” said Menominee Tribal Legislator Joey Awonohopay.

History of Restoration coming alive in show

What is sometimes lost in the story of Menominee Restoration is that many people acted because it was asked of them. Ada Deer, Sylvia Wilber, Shirley Daly, and countless others became involved with the movement to restore their tribe’s federal trust status because their parents and community asked them to do so. The leaders of DRUMS, which stands for Determination of Rights and Unity for Menominee Stockholders, put their Creator-given talents to work.

Remains not linked to missing person cases

A human skull and multiple bones discovered by a hunter in the Menominee tribal forest on Oct. 30 is not linked.

Authorities have not released the location of where the remains were found, which has subsequently been described as somewhere north of Keshena off of state Highway 55. The area has been closed off and authorities are continuing to investigate.

“If we don’t do something, this will be what kills the Menominees.”

Lynn Skenandore was very pointed in her remarks during a community meeting Oct. 22 organized to discuss the plague of drug abuse and distribution on the Menominee Reservation.

“Our people fought for this land,” Skenandore said. “They stood up on that hill, and they said, ‘We will die here. You will not move us.’ We have to fight now, or we’re going to die here. There will be no more Menominees left. They will have gone the way of fentanyl.”
