Bears fall short in sectional semifinal

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team had its state dreams dashed by Mishicot in a Division 4 sectional semifinal playoff game on March 2 in Oconto Falls.

Bonduel fouls and Mishicot free throws were a big theme in the second half and proved to be the deciding factor in the final seconds. Bonduel was whistled for a foul with 1.9 seconds left, allowing Mishicot to make two free throws and come away with a 42-40 win.

Bonduel’s Sokolski dominant on way to title

Bonduel High School’s Maddy Sokolski capped off a perfect season with a state title in the girls 138-pound weight class during the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual State Tournament, which ran Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Sokolski didn’t surrender a point in any of her four state matches, with a 7-0 decision over Middleton’s Mattie Papenthien in the final being the only win not to come by pin.

Bonduel girls win CWC-East basketball title outright

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team won the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division title outright after taking down Iola-Scandinavia 59-23 on Feb. 16 in Bonduel.

Bonduel earned its 20th win of the season and capped the conference portion of the year with a 13-1 mark.

“I mean, it’s just a good feeling,” said Bonduel’s Ella Hischke. “After last year when we had to share it, we didn’t want to share it this year. This is the first step of what we want to accomplish, so it’s a really good feeling.”

47 individual boys wrestlers qualify for sectionals

Forty-seven area high school wrestlers earned big wins to place in the top four at regionals on Feb. 11 and earn spots at sectionals.

Pulaski and Wittenberg-Birnamwood placed second as teams at their regionals to qualify for team sectionals.

Division 1

Pulaski and Shawano each competed at the Green Bay West Regional in Green Bay.

Thirteen Pulaski wrestlers placed in the top four to advance as individuals. The team earned 248½ points to finish behind only Bay Port’s 275½ points.

New-look wrestling postseason ahead as girls join mix

The postseason has arrived for high school wrestlers.

After girls wrestling held its inaugural state tournament in 2022 at the La Crosse Center, the girls will get to showcase their talents at state this winter at the Kohl Center alongside the boys. With the state tournament now including boys and girls wrestling, the postseason has a new look, and here’s a quick look at some of the proceedings.

Athlete Profile: Louis Hrabik

Bonduel High School’s Louis Hrabik has been through a couple coaches, a transition to a varsity team and also played several different positions, but has been a leader through it all for the Shawano co-op hockey team.

Through 13 games this winter, he’s scored four goals and assisted on seven others, even though he’s played defense in the latter portion of the season.

Witt-Birn claims 2nd at CWC Wrestling Tournament

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team earned a second-place finish at the Central Wisconsin Conference Tournament on Feb. 4 in Shiocton.

The Chargers had three conference champions and three second-place finishers on their way to scoring 203 points, only behind Shiocton's 273½.

Bonduel had five first- or second-place finishers at the conference tournament and accumulated 174 points to grab third place. Menominee Indian scored 44 points to take eighth.

Athlete Profile: Kendra Troxel

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team is eyeing another Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division title. For the senior class, which includes Kendra Troxel, it would be another accomplishment in what’s been a special four-year run.

Through 19 games this season, Troxel is averaging just under six points a game. She scored eight or more points on seven occasions, including a season-high 15 points against Iola-Scandinavia back on Jan. 13. Five of those eight-plus points games have come since Jan. 10.

Bonduel boys basketball team cruises past Green Bay West

The Bonduel High School boys basketball team led from start to finish during a 64-42 nonconference win over Green Bay West on Jan. 30 in Bonduel.

Plenty of Bears saw game action, and nine of the 11 players who took the floor scored.

“It’s great. I feel like we all deserve to be on the court,” said freshman big man Ryan Westrich, who led Bonduel with 19 points and 16 rebounds. “We all know that we can score and we all know that we can play tough basketball, and I’m just really glad that we all stepped up today.”

Shawano, Bonduel girls wrestlers rack up 5 1st-place finishes

Area high school girls wrestlers put their talents on display and turned in positive results against some of the state’s best during the Shawano Round Robin on Jan. 27 in Shawano.

In an effort to get wrestlers three matches each, weight classes were limited to four wrestlers max and filled out by girls at the closest weights. That meant wrestlers went up against others that might not otherwise be at their weight class, creating some big-time matchups along the way.
