Vertz, Thompson split top softball player honor

Area high school softball teams enjoyed plenty of success during the spring season, with a few teams and several individuals standing out.

It was Pulaski junior Morgan Vertz and Bonduel junior Hailee Thompson who were the top performers throughout the season, and were named the NEW Media Inc. Players of the Year for their efforts.

Both players were named Co-Players of the Year in their respective conferences and landed on all-state second teams.

3 Chargers, 1 Bear make CWC-East 1st team

Three baseball players from Wittenberg-Birnamwood and one from Bonduel made the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division first team this spring.

Senior Mason Meverden, junior Ian Salvesen and sophomore Owen Dickman made the first team from Witt-Birn, while junior Noah Weier represented Bonduel.

Bonduel Legion shuts out Shawano behind pitching trio

Despite the high school baseball season coming to a close, the American Legion season is in full swing as the Bonduel Grizzlies traveled to Shawano to take on the Patriots on June 14.

With Shawano looking to improve its early season record to 2-0, the Grizzlies had other plans as Mason Bohm, Cade Johnson and Charlie Tauchen combined to throw a three-hit shutout as Bonduel rolled 11-0.

Bears’ Thompson named Co-Player of Year in CWC-East

Bonduel High School junior softball player Hailee Thompson was named the Co-Player of the Year in the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division this spring.

Thompson made the all-conference first team unanimously after serving as the team’s shortstop this spring. She shared the Player of the Year honor with Amherst senior Haley Peskie.

Pulaski, Bonduel softball teams eliminated in sectional semifinals

The Pulaski and Bonduel softball teams were both eliminated from the playoffs after sectional semifinal losses on May 30.

Third-seeded Pulaski fell 11-1 in six innings to second-seeded Green Bay Preble. Top-seeded Bonduel lost 9-6 to third-seeded Iola-Scandinavia in Bonduel.

Pulaski jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a Cassie Benberg home run in the first inning, but things went downhill after that. Preble scored five times in its half of the first and four more times in the second to pull away. Single runs in the fourth and sixth for the hosts ended the contest.

Late charge propels Bears to regional softball title

The Bonduel High School softball team rallied from an early deficit before putting together a big inning late to earn a 7-2 Division 4 regional title win over Manawa on May 25 in Bonduel.

Top-seeded Bonduel fell behind 2-0 after fifth-seeded Manawa scored in the first and second innings. The Bears tied things up in the bottom of the second, and the game remained deadlocked until the sixth, when the hosts erupted for five runs to pull away.

Pulaski, Bonduel softball teams win regional semifinals

The Pulaski and Bonduel softball teams both earned regional semifinal playoff wins on May 23, while five other area teams were eliminated after losses.

Third-seeded Pulaski rolled to a 15-0 win over 14th-seeded Green Bay West/East in Pulaski. Top-seeded Bonduel eased to a 17-2 victory over eighth-seeded Crandon in Bonduel.

Lena, Bonduel golf teams punch tickets to sectionals

The Lena and Bonduel boys golf teams placed in the top four at the Division 3 Bonduel Regional on May 23 to advance on to sectionals.

Lena posted a team score of 332 to win the regional, which was held at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil. Bonduel placed second with a mark of 344.

Roncalli (348) and Mishicot (369) were the other two teams that advanced on to sectionals. Gillett also competed at the regional, taking seventh with a score of 419.

Area track and field sectional qualifiers

Area track and field teams started postseason action at regional meets on May 22, with many individuals and relay teams qualifying for sectionals.

Pulaski and Shawano competed in Division 1 regionals. Menominee Indian, Oconto Falls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood were at a Division 2 regional, while Bonduel, Gillett, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, Suring, Wolf River Lutheran, Gresham/Bowler and Marion all competed in Division 3 regionals.

To advance to sectionals, individuals or relay teams had to place in the top four.

Bonduel boys win home track and field invitational

The Bonduel High School boys track and field team won the team’s home invitational after accumulating 145 points on May 18 in Bonduel.

Bonduel outlasted Manawa (134) for the top spot. Menominee Indian (70) claimed third, while Gresham/Bowler (60) was fourth. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (43) and Wolf River Lutheran (20) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the girls side of things, Manawa took first with 153 points. Bonduel (108) took second, while Menominee Indian (104) was third. Witt-Birn (79) and Gresham/Bowler (43) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.
