Bonduel orchard everflowing with apples

“Something for everyone” isn’t an exaggeration for visitors to Everflow Farm and Orchard at W3945 Landstad Road south of Bonduel, especially at this time of year.

Visitors can pick their own apples or buy prepicked in the farm store. Raspberries are available to self-pick, and the owner doesn’t mind if visitors toss a few raspberries into their mouths.

People are welcome to just stroll through the orchard of more than 2,000 apple trees. Hay rides and a corn maze will be open soon. Apples are available to hand-feed to the cattle behind the farm store.

Highway 117 project finishes on time

After four months of barricades, detour signs and orange barrels, folks in Bonduel can take any road they choose to get to their destination.

The village announced Aug. 6 on its Facebook page that state Highway 117 was fully open to traffic, with the last item being the traffic lights returning to the intersection at County Road BE. It did not take long for the highway to become busy again, a welcome sight to businesses and homes along the route that had been impacted by the work.

Bears lose in semifinal game at state tourney

Bonduel’s first-ever trip to the state baseball tournament ended in defeat in the Division 3 semifinal game at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The No. 3 seeded Bears lost 2-1 to No. 2 seed Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic on June 11.

Kenosha St. Joseph took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an error, a double, a wild pitch and a ground out.

Bonduel scored its only run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Easton Reinke and Noah Weier.

Bonduel had its chances but couldn’t get that key hit to score.

Bears win sectional title, advance to state tournament

After three playoff games each decided by a single run, Bonduel broke open the bats in the sectional championship game, defeating St. Mary Catholic 6-0 on June 4.

The win propels the Bears in the state tournament June 11 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium, Grand Chute, the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The other three Division 3 state qualifiers are Aquinas, Cumberland and Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic.

All teams will be seeded the evening of June 5.

Bonduel athletes announce college plans

Seven Bonduel High School athletes signed their college letters of intent at a special gathering May 8 at the school, as coaches, friends and family looked on and congratulated the seniors.

The athletes and their chosen colleges are Easton Reinke, UW-Stevens Point; Hailee Thompson, Lakeland University; Ella Hischke, UW-Platteville; Jake Dreyer, Milwaukee School of Engineering; Noah Weier, UW- La Crosse; Ben O’Brien, UW-Oshkosh; and Haley Ruehle, UW-Whitewater.

Ruehle plans to major in art education and become a high school art teacher.

Baby dies in Bonduel after being run over

A 5-month-old baby died after being run over by a vehicle at a home May 8 in Bonduel.

Multiple crews performed life saving measures on the baby who was eventually air lifted to a hospital in the Green Bay area. Due to injuries sustained in this incident, the baby was unfortunately pronounced dead at the hospital.

All individuals on scene, including the parents and the driver of the vehicle were fully cooperative with law enforcement.

Highway 117 work in Bonduel ahead of schedule

Reconstruction work on state Highway 117 in Bonduel is about a week and a half ahead of schedule, according to Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials at an informational meeting April 25, not even slowed down by a water main break in the village earlier in the week.

However, that’s no guarantee that the project, scheduled for full completion in mid-July, will finish early, according to Chris VandenBush with Advance Construction, the company doing the work.

Bonduel church celebrating 100 years

Zion United Methodist Church of Bonduel is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its building and will hold a special worship service and celebration at 10:30 a.m. May 12 at the church, 134 E. Green Bay St., Bonduel.

Bishop Hee-Soo Jung, resident bishop in the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, will deliver a message.

Student research links charitable giving to empathy

If you’re an empathic person, chances are that you’d be more willing to give to charity, according to a Bonduel resident attending University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Colton Anderson, a psychology student at the university, teamed up with Ethan Wondrash to look at data from a recent survey and learned that the results that empathy can be a factor in more giving to various causes. Their research garnered enough attention to be part of the Research in the Rotunda event earlier this year in Madison.

Bonduel boys basketball team defeated by Marathon in sectional final

Bonduel’s boys basketball team ended their season at 26-2 after a 68-61 loss to Marathon in the sectional finals March 9.

Marathon held a slim 29-24 lead at the intermission and added to their final margin of victory with a 39-37 second half.

Noah Weier led the Bears with 20 points, followed by Race Anvelink’s 13 points and Quinn Wessenberg’s 10 points. Carter Moesch and Colin Margelofsky each contributed four points, while Cade Johnson added two.
