Salvesen scores 2,000th point in regional win over Spooner

Personal statistics are not a big deal to Rory Salvesen.

That’s why the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School senior wondered what was going on Feb. 27 during the first half of the Chargers’ WIAA regional semifinal matchup with Spooner.

Her basket had given the Chargers a 27-0 lead in the first half and she was well on her way to a 36-point night.

Whiting adds name to wrestling record book

Taylor Whiting would not cut it as a post player on a girls basketball team.

Wrestling is a different story, however, as the Lena senior won her fourth straight state championship Feb. 28 with a 10-5 win over Manitowoc Lincoln’s Emjay Neumann in the 114-pound championship match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament in Madison.

Wrestling creates special bond between brother, sister

Four years after winning his fourth state wrestling championship, Clayton Whiting was back at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament.

Whiting, who won his championships while wrestling for Oconto Falls High School from 2019-22, had a front-row seat to watch his sister, Taylor, win her fourth championship Feb. 28 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Homan helps turn Shawano wrestling program around

Mike Homan’s roots in Shawano’s wrestling program go back more than two decades.

He wrestled for the Hawks before graduating from Shawano Community High School in 2004 and took over as varsity coach in 2014.

All in all, it turned out to be a successful three days for area wrestlers at the WIAA State Individual Tournament, held Feb. 26-28 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Wildcats, Chargers, Hawks advance to sectionals

Lena’s girls basketball team needed its three-point halftime lead as both teams scored 24 points after the break, giving the Wildcats a 47-44 regional title win over Three Lakes/Phelps.

Carla Caballero-Morante led Lena with 16 points, while Ella Thomson scored 13 and Alisa Finger had six.
