Inspirational speaker tells Bonduel students not to bottle their shame

Terrence Talley brought a story of shame March 4 to the Bonduel schools to children and adults alike, encouraging them to address it rather than keep it bottled inside.

During the day, he visited the three schools with different messages, ranging from talking about superheroes with the elementary school students to telling high schoolers that nobody has a perfect life.

4 seek 2 seats on Gillett School Board

At least one new face will join the Gillett School Board at the next swearing-in ceremony.

One incumbent and three challengers will compete for two seats in the April 7 election. The winners will serve three-year terms.

Jamie J. Heroux is the incumbent. Challengers are Nicole Blaskowski, Ben Korth and Elizabeth Telford.

Oconto Falls Fire Department to host spaghetti dinner

The Oconto Falls Fire Department will host its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 21.

Dinner, desserts, refreshments and bucket raffles will be offered at the fire station at 431 Union Ave., Oconto Falls.

Prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 60 and older, $5 for children ages 5-12 and free for those 4 and younger.

Proceeds will be used to purchase additional training equipment.

Christmas committee forms for downtown events

Christmas is getting too big for one person to plan, so the Shawano Business Improvement District Board on March 5 approved forming a committee to help its director, Lindsey Johnson, to coordinate the growing list of activities.

Board President Chelsea Gilling noted that the BID’s efforts to bring shoppers to the downtown area during the holiday season is paying off.

Deputy, K-9 leave Shawano for Menominee County

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department is down two officers — one human and one K-9.

Deputy Cody Vigue’s last day was March 1. When he quit to accept a job with the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department, he took his K-9 partner Rascal with him.

“They are going to purchase the dog from SOS K-9,” Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner said about the neighboring county’s plans to buy the dog.

Fair attendance hits another new record

For the second consecutive year, the Shawano County Fair had record attendance, according to the Shawano Area Agricultural Society, which oversees the fairgrounds.

Attendance at the 2025 fair was 74,091, an increase of 4.5% from the 2024 attendance record of 70,751.

Police suicide prevention proactive in Shawano

Four former Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department deputies took their own lives over a six-year period, according to a recent investigation done by The Badger Project, an independent Wisconsin news nonprofit organization.

In all four cases, trauma — whether it was on the job or off — was a factor that caused mental health issues, according to the investigation.
