State corn planting 2/3 complete
Wisconsin had 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 19, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Drier weather conditions throughout most of the week allowed the pace of planting progress to increase. Field activities included tilling, planting crops and cutting hay.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 1% very short, 8% short, 74% adequate and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated zero percent very short, 10% short, 77% adequate and 13% surplus.
Corn planting was 66% complete, two days ahead of last year and the five-year average. Corn emergence was 23% complete.
Soybean planting was 57% complete, three days ahead of last year and four days ahead of average. Soybean emergence was 21% complete.
Oat planting progress was 81% complete, three days ahead of last year and two days ahead of average. Oat emergence was 56% complete.
Winter wheat was 5% headed, five days ahead of last year and average.
Potato planting is 82% complete, two days ahead of last year and one day ahead of average.
Spring tillage was 82% complete, three days ahead of last year and two days ahead of average.
The first cutting of alfalfa hay was 8% complete, three days ahead of last year and five days ahead of average.
Oat condition was 71% good to excellent statewide. Winter wheat condition was rated 86% good to excellent, up 1% from last week. Potato condition was rated 87% good to excellent. All hay condition was rated at 75% good to excellent, up 1% from last week. Pasture and range condition remained at 59% good to excellent.
