Shawano girls take 3rd at conference meet
The Shawano Community High School girls track and field team earned a third-place finish at the Bay Conference Championships on May 13 in De Pere.
The girls team scored 118 points to finish third. The Shawano boys came in sixth with 79 points.
The girls 4x800-meter relay team of Adalyn Barkley, Bailey Hendricks, Lily Guenther and Grace Chelberg not only earned a first-place finish, but also set a new Bay Conference meet record with a time of 9 minutes, 47.05 seconds.
Individually, Chelberg won the 800 in 2:24.07 and was third in the 1,600 in 5:29.21. Hatty Fritz had the team's other first-place finish, doing so in the girls shot put (32 feet, 8 inches).
Ethan Onesti helped lead the boys team with second-place finishes in the 800 (2:03.13) and 1,600 (4:32.92).
Brandon Reed was the second-place finisher in the boys 300 hurdles (42.65) and third-place finisher in the 110 hurdles (15.94).
Will Chelberg earned third in the boys 1,600 (4:33.28) and 3,200 (10:17.46).
Reed, Onesti, Drake Herm and Jaymin Boivin were on the third-place finishing 4x400 relay team (3:40).
Tela Hopfensperger helped the Hawks make more history when she broke the school record in the 300 hurdles. She placed third in 49.83 seconds.
Also placing third individually for the girls was Guenther in the 3,200 (12:14.74), Madisyn Weinig in the shot put (32-1), Onna Hermann in the pole vault (9-6) and Macey Nelson in the long jump (15-5).
