The Shawano Community High School boys and girls cross-country teams turned in strong finishes at a loaded Shawano Invitational on Sept. 11 in Shawano.

The Shawano boys placed fourth overall with a team score of 121, while the girls came in sixth with 184 points. Against other Division 2 schools, the Shawano boys claimed second, while the girls were fourth.

Leading the Shawano boys on the course was Ethan Onesti, who completed the course in 16 minutes, 59.8 seconds for an eighth-place finish overall.

Will Chelberg and Aidan Preston landed just outside the top 20. Chelberg took 21st in 17:46.6, while Preston took 22nd in 17:46.5.

“For us to finish fourth overall among some competitive teams shows us that we can compete against larger schools and that we have some great potential as we move forward with our season,” said Chelberg. “I think if we keep working hard in practice and focus on improving we can continue to see great success.”

Andon Chelberg claimed 29th in 18:02, while Connor Chelberg was 45th in 18:38.8 to cap the team score.

The trio of Grace Beyer, Grace Chelberg and Lily Guenther led the Shawano girls team on the day.

Beyer led the way with a seventh-place finish overall in 20:45.3. Chelberg placed ninth in 21:01.8, while Guenther was 10th in 21:01.9.

“With harder competition at the meet, we were able to push ourselves more and work together as a team to stay towards the front,” said Beyer. “We were able to run against competition that we will be seeing again at conference and sectionals which puts everything into perspective of where we should be running. We have a lot of work to do as a team in order to accomplish some of our goals but the season has been going great so far.”

Adalyn Barkley and Onna Hermann were the only other two varsity girls runners for the Hawks, placing 83rd and 94th, respectively. Barkley posted a time of 24:52.1, while Hermann completed the course in 25:17.1.

Bonduel

The Bonduel girls placed 10th overall with a team score of 244, while the boys were 12th with a mark of 360. With Gillett serving as the only other qualifying Division 3 team in action, the Bonduel girls were first and boys second.

Ashlyn Kurey and Kendra Troxel led the way for the girls team. Kurey was the team’s top finisher with a time of 22:11.9 to place 27th overall. Troxel took 33rd in 22:26.7.

“I think our team performed very well today,” said Kurey. “It’s early in the season so we all have room to improve but I think overall today we had a great performance.”

Freshman Teagan Engel landed in the top 50, completing the course in 23:01 to take 47th.

Joselyn Bohm (24:01) and Kaitlin Brooks (25:41.4) capped the team score with 66th- and 99th-place finishes, respectively.

On the boys side, it was senior Cooper Uelmen that led the way with a 49th-place finish in 18:44.

“I feel like we did very well. We had four medalists in the top 10 for our division and had multiple runners set season records for themselves,” said Uelmen. “Obviously, we were a smaller school in such a big race, but it’s good to have that competition so you’re always pushing ourselves.”

Ben O’Brien placed 66th in 19:17.6, while Ayden Dunst was 86th in 20:01.5. Race Anvelink (20:09.2) and Ben Reisner (23:57.7) rounded out the team’s top-five finishers, claiming 92nd and 133rd, respectively.

The Menominee Indian boys placed 16th overall with a team score of 415 and were seventh among D2 teams. Only one girls runner took part in the invitational.

Isaiah Moss led the five-runner boys team with a 77th-place finish in 19:36.7.

Lloyd Reevis (19:57.2) wasn’t far behind Moss, placing 85th. Barron Waupoose (20:17.7), Francis Delabrau (20:56.9) and Darus Davis (23:57.9) filled out the team, taking 95th, 110th and 134th, respectively.
