Richards named Legion auxiliary member of the year

Marlis Richards, of Townsend, has been named the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 member of the year.

Serving as vice president, she joined the auxiliary seven years ago after moving here from Illinois with her husband, George, who is now the American Legion Post 44 Commander.

Richards is very active, enjoys the friendships she has made attending auxiliary monthly meeting, conferences, etc.

Richards contributes to the auxiliary in many ways helping at fundraisers including poultry shoots, Fish-O-Ree, poppy distribution, candy sales, brat frys, Weiner Fest, the Ride for Vets at Paul Bunyon Ski Hill and hosting socials. Richards helps with whatever is necessary, food for the Memorial Day luncheon and many behind the scenes activities assisting her husband as his secretary, setting up and cleaning the post to prepare for dinners, banquets and other post events.

Richards was born and raised in Green Bay and worked as a bakery manager. She and her husband started a cleaning business which they owned for 15 years in Illinois before moving to Townsend eight years ago. They are members of St. Mary’s Church in Lakewood and she enjoys going with church members and others and going to the Lakewood Assisted Living Home monthly to play bingo with the residents.
