Phyllis Smith

Phyllis Smith, 93, of Green Bay, passed away on Dec. 24, 2021, at Tender Hearts Assisted Living in Howard. Phyllis Leona Shallow was born on June 3, 1928, in the Township of Little River. She was the second of 15 children of Oliver and Gladys (Brabant) Shallow Sr. of Lena.

Phyllis graduated from Lena High School in 1945. She was employed at the Lena branch of the Suring State Bank, then transferred to the Suring Bank, where she met Joseph P. Smith Jr. They married on Aug. 25, 1951, at St Charles Catholic Church in Lena. They resided in Suring for more than 50 years, where they raised their family and were active members of St Michael’s Catholic Church. They moved to Green Bay in 2002 and joined St John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Survivors, her children, Joseph (Joan) Smith III of Suring, Susan (Karen Ruhland) Smith of Tucson, Arizona, Terry Smith of Sturgeon Bay, Patti (Gene) Poradek of Oconto Falls, Gregory Smith of De Pere, six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also survived by her sisters, Marie (Bill) Grady, Shirley (Richard) Gilles and Gail Shallow, her brothers Russell (Mary) Shallow, Wayne (Bonnie) Shallow, Gerald Shallow, sisters-in- law, Margaret, Joyce, Eileen and Mary Lynn Shallow, Sharon Von Haden, Jeanette Pagel, and numerous relatives and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Joe (2007), brothers, Oliver Jr., Chester, Vernon (Eloise), Rodger, Richard, and Kenneth Shallow, sisters, Carmen (Donald) Danks, and Jean (Dale) Henrichs, her infant son Paul, and granddaughter Jillian (Smith) Panske.

Special thank you to Tender Hearts Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for the compassion and care shown towards Phyllis. A memorial service is being planned for spring.
