Howard J. Unrath

Howard J. Unrath, 92, of Shawano, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Sept. 12, 2019, at The Cottages in Shawano. Howard was a former resident of Pine Lake in the Cloverleaf Lakes.

Howard was born April 14, 1927, in Milwaukee, a son of the late Joseph and Alice (Oberlander) Unrath. He attended the Milwaukee schools, graduating from Rufus King High School in 1945. On March 27, 1945, Howard entered the U.S. Navy. He served until Aug. 10, 1946. Upon returning from the service, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was employed at the Wisconsin State Highway Department, then went to work for the city of Milwaukee as a civil engineer.

On May 30, 1953, Howard was united in marriage to the former Eugenia Wellworth at St. Aquinas Catholic Church in Milwaukee. The couple made their home in Milwaukee until Howard’s retirement in 1987. They then moved to the family cottage on Pine Lake. Eugenia preceded Howard in death Nov. 30, 2012. Howard was an Eagle Scout and an avid hunter of ducks, geese and deer. He also enjoyed fishing, water-skiing and scuba diving. He was a true conservationist. Howard roller-skated weekly in Heartland for many years, and he was an excellent figure skater.

He was a member of the Shawano Lodge 170 Free and Accepted Masons the Scottish Rite. Howard is a past president of the Cloverleaf Lakes Association. He is also a past member of the Clintonville American Legion. Howard assembled the American Legion float, which he proudly drove in parades. He loved building, and he built all of the homes in which he lived.

Survivors include his children, Karen Tiemann, of Little Chute, Russell Unrath, of Bayview, Sandra J. Unrath, of Cloverleaf Lakes, Lynn (Mike) Mulholland, of Greenville, and Carl (Elizabeth) Unrath, of Merrill; five grandchildren, Katie and Lindsay Mulholland, Philip Tiemann, Paul (Marleny) Tiemann and Theresa (David) Smith; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Lincoln Tiemann; and several nieces, relatives and friends.

A gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, from 4-6 p.m. at Mickelson Funeral Service. A Masonic service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the Shawano AmVets Post 10 immediately following the Masonic service. Interment will take place in Valhalla Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
