Gresham volleyball team tops Tigerton in regional title match

The Gresham Community High School volleyball team defeated Elcho and Tigerton to claim a Division 2 regional title on April 10 in Gresham.

Gresham, the No. 1 seed in its pod, opened the alternate fall season postseason with a sweep of Elcho. The Wildcats dominated, winning by scores of 25-10, 25-7, 25-14.

The win advanced Gresham into the regional title match, where second-seeded Tigerton awaited.

Tigerton claimed the first set, but Gresham stormed back, winning the final three sets to win the regional title. The Wildcats won by scores of 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20.

In the win over Elcho, Gresham's Valarie Cerveny tallied 18 service points, while Hannah Cerveny had 15 service points and 19 assists. Chloe Bohl contributed 14 kills, while Makayla Belongia chipped in eight kills.

Against Tigerton, Valarie Cerveny posted 19 kills and 11 service points, while Bohl had eight kills. Hannah Cerveny finished with 25 assists and 16 digs, and Kalayla Tucker also had 16 digs. Josie Cerveny and Maddie Haffner had 12 service points each.

Gresham next will advance to sectionals, which will be played April 13. The Wildcats will learn their opponent and venue on April 11.

Tigerton advanced to the regional title match after topping third-seeded Bowler earlier in the day. The Tigers won by scores of 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-13.

In its win over Bowler, Tigerton's Savannah Swartz provided 16 combined kills, 16 digs and 10 service points, while Skyler Hauser added 15 combined kills, 10 service points and eight digs. Adrienne Brady led the Tigers with 16 assists, Ladia Block tallied a team-high 21 digs and Elizabeth Robbins had a team-leading 13 service points.

Bowler's McKayla Putnam led her team with 13 combined kills and 11 assists. Tynea Johnson chipped in nine combined kills and seven digs, while Tia Kroening had 10 digs and six attack kills.

Against Gresham, Swartz again led the Tigers with 20 combined kills, adding in 13 digs. Brady posted 18 assists and Block finished with 26 digs.

Menominee Indian played at Kewaunee High School for its Division 2 regional pod. The third-seeded Eagles were swept by second-seeded Oneida Nation in a regional semifinal matchup. Fourth-seeded Algoma ended up winning the regional title in that pod.
