Election 2022 — Oconto County Board, District 28

Two people with experience in town government are running for Oconto County Board in District 28, one of five districts with no incumbent under the new maps drawn in accordance with the 2020 U.S. Census.
District 28 is one of the easier-to-describe new districts: It consists of all of the towns of Breed and How.
NEW Media sent questionnaires to the candidates, Carol Heise and Richard Vande Wettering, to provide readers with their background and opinions on key issues facing the county.

Why do you want to serve on the Oconto County Board?
Heise: I am running for office to be a voice for the citizens of our county, specifically those in District 28 (Towns of Breed and How). I have lived in this county all my life and want to see it be competitive to attract business while maintaining the natural resources and great quality of life we have.
Vande Wettering: With district changes, I want to serve the citizens of Breed and How as their supervisor.

What do you see as the biggest issue(s) facing the board over the next two years?
Heise: While I won’t pretend to know all the issues facing the board, I feel that obtaining and maintaining quality personnel is a constant challenge, especially in the employment environment we are currently experiencing. Offering competitive wages yet sustaining a balanced budget is a key responsibility of the county board. My past related experience would be valuable to these issues. Maintaining our county-owned forests and park system to be accessible and self-sustaining should be continued to keep said costs off the tax roll as much as possible.
Vande Wettering: Drugs in the county are a concern. It is important we supply law enforcement the tools necessary to combat that issue. Another concern is broadband for all. We must seek all possible grants, state and federal assistance available to get everyone the opportunity for service.

In what areas/topics do you believe you can contribute to the board and the county?
Heise: I feel I could contribute to a variety of areas in the county, as my past experience in local government, and all the variety there, gives me perspective to contribute pros and cons to situations before decisions are finalized.
Vande Wettering: My experience as chairman, dealing with budgeting issues, road maintenance, personel concerns and working with the town board to resolve problems as they arise.
