A Sobieski man awaiting trial in a fatal 2018 crash is being held in lieu of $100,000 cash after he allegedly violated terms of his bail.

Cade Wied, 20, Sobieski, is charged with second-degree reckless homicide, second-degree reckless injury and two counts of knowingly driving with a suspended license in connection with the Dec. 14, 2018, crash that killed 14-year-old September Deneys and injured Wied and another youth.

According to a new criminal complaint in Oconto County Circuit Court, Wied was seen driving an SUV on Dec. 21, and a sheriff’s deputy obtained surveillance video of him filling the vehicle with gas, climbing in and driving away.

Wied had been free after posting $25,000 bail, but because the crash occurred while his license was suspended, Judge Michael T. Judge ordered that he was not to drive any motor vehicle at any time, the complaint said.

During a brief court appearance Jan. 4, Judge upped the required bail to $100,000 with the amount to cover both the earlier charges and the new bail-jumping case.

A three-day jury trial scheduled to start Jan. 20 was postponed, although that may have happened in any case. All jury trials have been postponed in Oconto County Circuit Court since the governor ordered a general shelter-in-place order last March because of pandemic concerns.
