College Highlights (May 6)

St. Norbert College

Pulaski High School graduate Kendall Karcz was invited to the Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp following the 2022 NFL Draft.

According to multiple sources, including CBS Sports Packers beat writer Zachary Jacobson and Synergy Sports — where Karcz does workouts — Karcz earned a tryout with the green and gold.

This past football season, Karcz intercepted seven passes for St. Norbert, returning two for touchdowns. The defensive back also had 51 total tackles, 2½ tackles for losses, one sack and two pass breakups through 10 games. He also scored on a punt return.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate Simon Stewart, Bonduel graduate Noah Beilfuss and Oconto Falls graduate Mason Sefcik all pitched for the St. Norbert baseball team last week.

Stewart got an out during the team’s win over Rockford on April 27. He then allowed two runs over two innings in a loss to Marian on May 1.

Beilfuss also pitched in the May 1 loss, surrendering four runs over two innings.

Sefcik was tagged with a loss in another loss to Marian on May 1. He allowed five runs over 4⅓ innings.

Lena graduate Kennedy Marquardt and Oconto Falls graduate Emily Gonnering each represented the St. Norbert track and field team at meets last week.

Marquardt competed at the Kip Janvrin Open on April 29, placing 33rd in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.26 seconds.

Gonnering took part in the St. Norbert Quad on April 30. She placed 12th in the javelin throw with a toss of 25.43 meters. She also took 15th in the hammer throw (31.16 meters) and discus (30.24 meters).

UW-Platteville

Pulaski grad Kayla Lipsey was on the UW-Platteville 4x200 relay team that placed 22nd at the Drake Relays on April 27.

The relay team completed the race in 1:45.34.

UW-Stout

Pulaski graduate Kevin Ruechel represented the UW-Stout men’s track and field team and competed in the shot put and discus at the Drake Relays on April 29 and 30.

Ruechel was the only Division III competitor in the shot put field, and he placed 14th with a throw of 56 feet, 10¼ inches. He finished ahead of six Division I athletes and two Division II competitors.

Ruechel took 26th in the discus with a throw of 138-9.

College of Lake County

Menominee Indian grad Jamison Besaw pitched 1⅔ innings during the College of Lake County baseball team’s 10-0 win over Olive-Harvey College on April 25.

Besaw struck out two batters and didn’t allow a hit or walk.

Concordia University

Bonduel graduate Derrick Folkman finished 20th in the 800 meters while representing the Concordia men’s track and field team at the St. Norbert Quad on April 30.

Folkman posted a time of 2:26.61.

UW-River Falls

Shawano grad Jewel Waupekenay continued to produce for the UW-River Falls softball team last week.

In a loss to UW-La Crosse on April 29, Waupekenay singled. Waupekenay walked in the team’s loss to UW-Stevens Point on May 1, and then singled and scored a run in a win over Point later that day.

UW-Stevens Point

Menominee Indian graduate Guadalupe Corn posted turned in three top-10 finishes for the UW-Stevens Point women’s track and field team during the St. Norbert Quad on April 30.

Corn placed sixth in the discus with a top throw of 33.43 meters. She came in eighth in the shot put with a throw of 10.47 meters, and was ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.11 meters.

UW-La Crosse

Oconto Falls grad Tucker Bouche tossed 1⅓ scoreless innings to help the UW-La Crosse baseball team top Gustavus Adolphus on April 27.

Bouche worked around two walks and a hit. He induced three groundouts and a flyout.

UW-Madison

Shawano graduate Brandi Gueths was on the Wisconsin women’s rowing team’s varsity eight squad that competed at the Iowa Invitational on April 29.

The team placed third in 7:00.44.

Dubuque University

Gillett grad Riley Engebretsen competed in the 1,500-meter run while representing the Dubuque men’s track and field team at the Kip Janvrin Open on April 29.

Engebretsen placed 90th with a time of 4:51.38.

Western Technical College

Pulaski graduate Chase Reinke got on base twice during the Western Technical College baseball team’s loss to Rochester Community and Technical College on May 1.

Reinke drew a pair of walks to get on base. He went on to score once.

Winona State University

Witt-Birn grad Maddy Pietz was a part of two strong finishes for the Winona State women’s track and field team at the River City Rumble on April 29.

Pietz was on the first-place finishing 4x100 relay team. The team’s time of 46.63 seconds set a new facility record.

Individually, Pietz placed second in the 200 with a time of 25.11 seconds.
