Breaking ice strands eight on bay

By NEW Media Staff

Eight people were rescued from the bay of Green Bay on March 27 after they became stranded on a large section of ice.
According to a news release from the Little River Fire Department, the incident began just off shore from North Bay Shore County Park when the call came about 6:45 p.m.
Personnel were able to rescue one person from the ice using a small flat-bottom boat, but then the ice floe moved too far away from shore, and the U.S. Coast Guard, Marinette Fire Department and Bayside Ice and Marine Recovery were contacted for the use of their airboats.
By the time Bayside arrived with an airboat, the ice had moved about 1.5 miles from shore. Rescue personnel were able to reach the stranded people and bring them all safely to shore.
Other agencies involved included Oconto County Sheriff’s Department, Oconto County Emergency Management and Oconto Fire and Rescue.
