Athlete Profile: Brianna Delzer

Oconto Falls thrower excelling as season winds down

Oconto Falls High School’s Brianna Delzer has saved some of her best performances for late in her high school career.

Delzer placed first in the shot put and discus at the Oconto County Meet on May 9. Her throw was 32 feet, 4½ inches in the shot put, winning the event by more than 2 feet. Delzer’s toss of 101-11 in the discus was the top mark by more than 8 feet.

Earlier in the season, she placed second in discus and third in shot put at a pair of North Eastern Conference triangulars.

Delzer placed fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot put during the NEC Championship on May 14.

Q: When did your interest in track and field begin?

A: I began my first year of track when I was a freshman.

Q: What is your favorite part about the track and field season?

A: Having fun with my teammates but still pushing to do our best. Most of the time us throwers are always laughing at the things we do wrong instead of being hard on ourselves, which makes it easier to be comfortable and learn from your mistakes.

Q: What has track and field taught you over the years?

A: You can have fun but still work hard.

Q: What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?

A: Shot put. My family is always there to give me new tips on form to throw farther.

Q: You’ve turned in several strong finishes over the past couple weeks. To what would you attribute your recent success?

A: Some of my credit goes out to my sister (Jessica Sellen) who is a current record holder of disc for Oconto Falls who always helps me with form for throwing. Otherwise it would be my parents (Ann Fuelle and Jay Delzer) pushing me to throw farther and give tips.

Q: As the season winds down, is there anything you are hoping to accomplish individually?

A: As the season is slowly ending I hope to hit over 110 feet in disc and over 33 feet in shot — something I know I am capable of doing. I’m also hoping I could beat my sister’s record in disc just because my family is pretty competitive and that way I would have something to brag about.

Q: As a senior, how do you help lead the rest of the team?

A: My biggest thing is to have fun, I’m always smiling or laughing in track. I encourage others to have fun and work hard. Everyone’s capable of achieving what they want as long as they work for it.

Q: Before a meet starts, do you or the team have any routines or rituals you go through?

A: As a team we go through warmups. Sometimes when us throwers really wanna get warmed up we run up and down hills.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Oconto Falls track and field team?

A: My favorite memory is when us throwers were laughing so hard one of the teammates threw up, then we all couldn’t stop laughing for minutes straight.

Q: Favorite movie, TV show and musical artist?

A: Movie — “42.” TV show — “Criminal Minds.” Musical artist — The Weeknd.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: My mom pushes me to my best, she knows I have great potential and not many people know she is my biggest supporter. She is my No. 1.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating high school?

A: Graduating high school going into college at NWTC for dental hygiene is my No. 1 focus. Becoming a dental hygienist and becoming successful is my dream accomplishment.
