Brown County Rifle Range open for sighting

The Brown County Rifle Range at the Reforestation Camp is open to the public for gun and bow sighting.

The rifle range is open from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. through Nov. 21.

A $7 charge per person or per gun or bow includes targets and assistance.

The range provides hearing protection and bore sighting. Lanes are available for archery and crossbow sighting.

With covered benches, the range is open rain or shine.

Save your heart: Use these tips to get deer out

Every year, dozens of deer hunters nationwide die not from an errant bullet, but from a heart attack while dragging out their prized buck or tasty doe.

Hunters 35 and older, especially those who smoke, chew tobacco or are overweight, may have a ticking time bomb inside, according to the Heart and Vascular Institute of Wisconsin.

Avoid baiting and feeding deer

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds hunters and the public to help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and other illnesses between deer by following all baiting and feeding bans and refraining from baiting and feeding in areas where no bans are in effect.

Wisconsin’s 2024 nine-day gun deer season opens Nov. 23

It’s almost time for hunters across Wisconsin to head out for the 2024 nine-day gun deer season, opening Nov. 23 and running through Dec. 1.

This is the latest nine-day window within which the season may occur, as established by state law.

Wendorff, Soper named top conference runners

Coming off his seventh place finish at the state cross country meet, Gillett High School junior Bradyn Wendorff was honored as most outstanding runner and named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference first team all-conference boys team, officials announced.

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy senior Mason Belongia was also named to the first team.

Second team honors were earned by Gillett senior Scott Herroux and Lena/STAA junior Erik Kosch.

DNR to host meetings on proposed changes to deer management units

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host four open houses in mid-November to share information about proposed changes to the state’s deer management units (DMUs). Three of these open houses will be in-person, with a fourth being entirely virtual.

The DNR reviews deer management unit boundaries every few years. This year’s review is focused on the management units in the Northern Forest Zone, the Metropolitan subunits and the boundary lines between the Central Forest and Farmland Zones.

The Farmland Zone units are not being reviewed at this time.

Peters named top defensive player of 2024

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy senior Calvin Peters was named defensive player of the year, Across the Bay Conference officials announced. He was one of several team members to earn all-conference honors.

Named to the first team offense were Peters and senior Tyler Shallow as running backs, junior Colt Miller as offensive end and senior Tug Paidl as offensive lineman.

For the defense, first team honors were earned by Shallow as defensive back, Peters as linebacker, Miller as defensive lineman.

Kristof named volleyball defensive specialist

Suring High School senior Emma Kristof was named the defensive specialist in the Marinette & Oconto Conference all-conference list for 2024.

Joining here with first team honors were Lena High School seniors Eva Brooks and Peyton Dorow.

Gillett High School sophomore Audrey Pate and Suring sophomore Lexi Remic were named to the second team.

Honorable mention status was earned by Suring freshman Ellayna Skarban.

Wendorff, Salveson lead cross country runners at state

Gillett’s Bradyn Wendorff led all area runners with a seventh-place finish in the Division 3 boys race at the state cross country tournament Nov. 2 in Wisconsin Rapids.

Wendorff completed the event in 16:26.7. There were 151 runners in the D3 race with the best time of 15:52.7.

The Bonduel boys team placed 14th among 16 teams.

Race Anvelink led the Bears with a 30th-place finish in 17:50.3. He was joined by Gage Anderson, 47th, 18:16.8; Griffin Uelmen, 56th, 18:28; Joah Dworniczak, 79th, 19:04.2; and Garrett Anderson, 93rd, 19:33.5.

Shawano, Bonduel win sectional volleyball matches

Shawano 3, Mosinee 1

Shawano traveled to Mosinee for the first round of sectional action and returned home one game away from the state tournament. Shawano won 3-1 and will play Altoona at Merrill on Nov. 2 for the sectional title and the right to play at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

All games against Mosinee were close battles. Shawano won the first game 25-18, then lost the second one 25-22. The Hawks prevailed in game 3, 25-16, and won the match with a 27-25 score in the fourth game.
