Kietlinski named top boys athlete

Bowler High School three-sport athlete Emmitt Kietlinski has been named the NEW Media Inc. Boys Athlete of the Year after a memorable senior season.

Kietlinski began the school competing on the Bowler/Gresham 8-player football team before starring for the Bowler basketball team. He then was one of the top boys athletes in the state, and eventually the country, as a track and field athlete this spring.

Rogowski repeats as top girls athlete

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School’s Reese Rogowski was named the NEW Media Inc. Girls Athlete of the Year for a second straight year after standout showings in her three sports.

The senior athlete helped the Chargers’ volleyball team qualify for state during the fall before a big basketball season in the winter. Rogowski wrapped up her high school athletic career with a strong track and field season, capping it by competing at the state meet.

Bonduel named top school after several strong showings across year

Area high school sports teams had another successful showing during the 2022-23 school year, with several memorable moments and accomplishments along the way.

Bonduel turned in several great seasons across several sports, helping the Bears earn the NEW Media Inc. School of the Year honor.

The school’s success began back in the fall season.

The girls cross-country team convincingly won a Central Wisconsin Conference title. The Bears then qualified for state as a team after winning a sectional title.

Another memorable year in the books

There were high hopes for area sports teams coming into the 2022-23 school year because of some talented individual athletes and strong teams, and they didn’t disappoint — with some memorable accomplishments occurring in each season.

Bonduel 11

Shawano 1 (7 inn.)

Bonduel cruised to a seven-inning win over Shawano on June 25 in Bonduel.

Adam Frost homered among his four hits, drove in five runs and scored three times to power Bonduel at the plate. Luke Kostreva and Eric Gruenwald drove in two runs each.

Chase Reinke earned the win on the mound, striking out six batters over seven frames.

Ashton Henning drove in a run on two hits for Shawano. He took the loss after pitching five innings, while Carson Popp also pitched.

Caroline 3

Tigerton picked up a road win over Caroline on June 23.

Paul Sellner earned the win on the mound after striking out six batters over eight innings. He also posted two hits at the plate.

Gunner Kopitzke, Austin Hoffman and Justin Sivertson each added two hits for Tigerton.

Klay Barkow took the loss on the hill. Braiden Behnke posted three of Caroline’s six hits.

Bartz claims $1,000 after winning IMCA Modified

Jordan Bartz, Todd Frank, Travis VanStraten, Tyler Sobiesczyk and Calvin Stueck earned feature wins on June 24 at Shawano Speedway.

The Late Models feature had, arguably, the hottest move of the night. Pole sitter Derek Janke led the opening lap but crossed the stripe almost even with fellow front row mate Joe Reuter. It didn’t look like either of those drivers was prepared for Frank to shoot between them into the lead coming out of turn two on the second lap.

Softball, baseball players honored by state, district

Several area softball and baseball players picked up all-state and all-district honors after the seasons wrapped up.

Players from Shawano, Bonduel, Marion, Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Pulaski were recognized for their play on the diamond and some for their work in the classroom.

Pulaski’s Morgan Vertz and Molly Molthen, Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Rory Salvesen and Bonduel’s Hailee Thompson all landed on all-state teams put out by the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.

DNR retiring Hunt Wild Wisconsin mobile app

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that as of June 29 the Hunt Wild mobile application will be retired.

Instead, hunting and regulation resources can be found on the DNR’s hunting webpage (dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Hunt)

The Hunt Wild mobile application was launched in 2018 to provide mobile access to hunting information. Hunting hours, site-specific rules and regulations, CWD sampling locations, public lands information and more could be found on the app.

Witt-Birn 3

Wittenberg-Birnamwood couldn't hold on to an early 3-0 lead in a tournament game setback to Clintonville on June 22 in Clintonville.

Ian Salvesen led Witt-Birn at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Keegan Benbo drove in the team's other run.

Chris Sippl took the loss on the hill after pitching the first 4⅓ innings. Pierson Potrykus worked the final 1⅔ innings.
