“Ugly apples are sometimes the best tasting,” said Paul Hammen, of Hammen Family Orchard and Winery on County Road E west of Bonduel.
Certain varieties, such as the knobbed russet, aren’t as red, round and shiny as the apple people would typically reach for, but Hammen attested that they can surprise with exceptional taste.
“That’s why we do apple tastings. Because there are lots of ugly apples out there,” he said. “The knobbed russet is the world’s ugliest apple but one of the best tasting apples.
